Making Of a Painting // Hole Hearted - DAY 5 January 2007

DAY FIVE (Jan 9, 2007)

Another long day of working in the studio... did my graphic design gig till about 6pm then had dinner and was back out to the studio to paint from 8 pm till 2am. So yeah... i spend about 15 hours in my studio / day. Unfortunately its not all makin art... there is so much more to being an artist... for one, making money doing something else that doesn't kill your creative fire. And the other part is the biz of of being an artist... a lot of time goes into making prints, packaging and shipping items, framing and getting art to the right places on the right calender dates... Man, all i wanna do is fuckin paint!

Just getting started - peelin off the plastic wrap. I put this stuff over my paint at night so it doesn't get all gummy to quick.

Here im starting to paint the background veins (the gold ones)

3 hours into it and the background veins are almost done.

Added highlights - but will have to tone a few of em down. This is always a fun part cuz it seems to put a lot of life into an object - also fun cuz it means yer almost done with an object :) Also focused on the heart holes some... defining edges, making the holes darker and just trying to make it look a bit more real.

So 6 hours was spent just fine tuning the heart... that part is almost done so its getting time to move on. I still have a lot of things to figure out about this painting ... hopefully it just continues to paint itself and will be done in a few dayz... we'll see.

I kicked the night off listening to sigur ros good and loud and it just sent me. Spent half the night totally depressed and the other half in a manic state, this happens sometimes when im painting so i dont even trip on it. In a twisted kinda way, it feels good. Painting is truly therapeutic for me - I get a l ot of shit out of my system through it. i think I would be fuct without it at this point. Lack of sleep is clearly catchin up with me - oh, and i need a beer, note to self, get a 12y after work.
