DAY TWO (Jan 6, 2007) Painting
Painted from 2pm-6pm while Tara took my son Kai to the zoo - yeah, there is sacrifice in every painting. Went to a friends for a bbq and then tucked the fam in and painted from 10pm till 2 am. Here's the play by play:

Just starting on the red. I put it on with the biggest brush i can use while still maintaining my lines... and then wipe it with a folded paper towel... im actually using the paper towel as a tool for blending... the trick is to wipe off enough paint to show the wood grain while keeping enough on that the color remains vibrant.

Just keep adding darker colors as i move outward and blending everything along the way.

I flip my paintings constantly to get the right angles for my hands/bush

Here is where i ended up after 8 hours of painting - there is still a lot of clean up around the stuff that looks pretty complete... and of course the devil is in the detail. So im movin quick (way quicker than i used to anyway) but i still have my work cut out for me.

Here's a long shot so you can see my set up - working with oil so i cant rest my hand on the painting... i rigged a brace that i can move around and rest my hand on when i need to hold still for detail ... super simple, just a chunk of wood rigged with a clamp - works like a fuckin charm.

Close up

I bring the paint just over the lines of foreground objects so i can still see the lines for reference, but when i paint the objects i can count on the background being done (no touch up - unless i fuck up! ha)

Smoked some trees last night - (not that kind!) went through bout half a roll of paper towels.

Just hit about 4 of these - good limes off my tree.

Very minimal pallet... to be honest its both a challenge and a relief!
To Be Continued ... keep an eye on my blog to see what happens next - will update daily till its done:
